Cops launch urgent hunt for John Bellfield, 28, wanted for murder of man as public warned 'do not ap

POLICE have launched an urgent hunt for a murder suspect and warned the public not to approach him.

Officers believe John Bellfield, 28, is a dangerous man and said he could be anywhere in the country.

He is wanted on suspicion of murdering Thomas Campbell, 38, last month in Tameside, Greater Manchester.

Three people have been charged so far in connection with Mr Campbell's death after he was found by a neighbour.

Detective Inspector Mark Davies today called Mr Campbell’s injuries horrific, admitting he was shocked by what he saw.

He added: “Anyone who is responsible for committing those injuries I’d consider to be a violent and dangerous individual. I’d like to reiterate not to approach Bellfield if seen.

“We have been working tirelessly ever since to find out who we suspect was responsible. We are now able to say publicly we think that Bellfield is one of these. 

“He is a dangerous individual and must not be approached. If you see Bellfield please call 999 immediately.

"If you are helping Bellfield and you know where he is and are withholding information, do be mindful that assisting a suspect can lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years."

At least two high value Rolex watches Mr Campbell owned have been missing since he died, which police want to find.

A statement by Mr Campbell's family called Tom a loving son, brother, uncle and devoted father.

It added: "He was always smiling. He would go out of his way to help his family and friends without a second thought."

Coleen Campbell, 38, of Clayton, has been charged with conspiracy to murder, along with Stephen Raymond Cleworth, 37, of Heywood, and Reece Steven, 29, of Middleton.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Do not approach Bellfield and if you see him call 999.

"We are actively seeking his arrest and ask that anyone with information about his whereabouts contacts us immediately.

"He is from the Openshaw area of the city and is believed to also have links to Lancashire, but could be anywhere in the country.

"Anyone who knows Bellfield, and may be withholding information, is reminded that assisting a suspect can lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

"Our detectives continue to investigate Thomas’ death in Mossley after his body was discovered on the morning of 3 July.
